Could Wi-Fi be Harmful to Health?

You are here: Home » Internet Connection »  Posted on 9:14 am, December 2, 2013 by sites

It’s a question that is inevitably asked of every piece of technology the more common it becomes: is this safe? From cellphones to microwaves, new technology always comes with a helping of health concerns when they become commonplace, and Wi-Fi is no different. Although the transmission frequencies used to connect with Wi-Fi are generally thought to be harmless to humans, a new study calls this into question.

In the past, studies by scientists in the Netherlands seemed to point to the fact that Wi-Fi signals could be harmful to plant life in the long run, but it was not suggested that the connection had a detrimental effect on human health. However, one group in New Zealand is now claiming that our connection addiction is more harmful than we had previously assumed.

According to a report by Safe Wireless Technology New Zealand (SWTNZ), research has confirmed that Wi-Fi connections may indeed have some negative health events owing to electromagnetic radiation. This research has not been confirmed by any further resources, but SWTNZ believes that prolonged exposure to Wi-Fi may increase headaches, nausea and perhaps even cancer.

The chairman of SWTNZ, Greg Kasper, said that the harmful effects of wireless connectivity can be proved by legitimate scientific evidence and that New Zealand’s government should be acting to learn more. Around the world, several governments are looking into the potential health effects of Wi-Fi technology.

UK Provider Vodafone Fails to Meet 3G Requirements

You are here: Home » Internet Connection »  Posted on 10:15 am, December 2, 2013 by sites

Around the world, most cellular service providers are getting ready to roll out 4G speeds or better, but service provider Vodafone has failed to meet the requirements for 3G connections in the UK.

Out of all major mobile providers in Britain, Vodafone is the only one not to live up to its contractual obligation to provide 3G connection coverage to 90% of the UK. According to a report by OfCom, the company, which held the license for 2100MHZ 3G connections along with EE, Three, and O2 was required under contractual terms to provide mobile coverage to at least 9 in 10 Brits. Whilst the other three companies have fulfilled their obligations, Vodafone’s mobile speed shortcomings have been publically addressed in Ofcom’s reports.

Vodafone has stated that in the coming months they intend to upgrade all the remaining 2G connection areas to long-awaited 3G speeds. Mobile connections should cover up to 98% of Britain by 2015, with 4G speeds also on the agenda, say Vodafone representatives. If the company succeed in fulfilling these claims, they will be a full 2 years ahead of the regulator’s 2017 deadline.

Super-Fast Broadband Dominating European Market

You are here: Home » Internet Connection »  Posted on 10:58 am, December 2, 2013 by sites

Recent figures have shown that the European Union is over half way to its target of offering speeds of 30 Mbps or higher to all residents by 2020. Currently, over 113 million households in the EU have access to super-fast broadband internet, though there is still a long way to go particularly for those in rural areas.

Nearly all households in Europe currently have access to some form of broadband service, though the standard for these connections is not nearly as fast as the 30 Mbps standard the EU is striving for. According to Point Topic, the company behind the European Commission’s survey, telephone line coverage still only extends to 76% of rural European communities, and super-fast internet connections are available in less than 6% of rural households. Additionally, cellular internet using LTE or 4G mobile broadband is only available in 10% of rural regions.

Whilst researching the state of broadband internet availability, Point Topic successfully mapped every square kilometer of Europe to plot the spread of connectivity. Mapped statistics in the UK have even begun to be used by real estate agents in the UK to show local broadband capabilities to prospective buyers. The map provided data on the availability of super-fast internet, rather than its adoption or penetration.

One problem faced by the spread of super-fast internet connection is not necessarily a case of availability as much as it is a problem with perception. Although the European Union has set out to provide a minimum of 30 Mbps connection available to all households, many people do not feel that these speeds are necessary for their internet use. As of early 2013 only 17.5% of all broadband subscriptions in the UK were for a super-fast internet connection.

US ranks lowly in terms of international download speeds

You are here: Home » Internet Connection »  Posted on 3:54 pm, December 2, 2013 by sites

Speedtest.net owners Ookla have recently released global internet speed rankings, where the US has placed a sluggish 31st in download speed tests. Asia and Europe are occupying most of the top spots of the chart, with the first five places being hogged by Hong Kong, Singapore, Romania, South Korea and Sweden respectively. Compared to Hong Kong’s 71.22 Mbps, the US’ 20.74 Mbps looks meager in comparison.

The fact that the US is sprawling compared to these countries, as well as the fact that there are still parts of the US which lack a modern internet infrastructure, lends a lot to these statistics. At the moment high-speed internet service is the subject of much talk in the US, with Google, AT&T and Amazon all jumping on the bandwagon.

UK Cathedral Pulls Wi-Fi Network over Unrestricted Access

You are here: Home » Internet Connection »  Posted on 5:21 pm, December 2, 2013 by sites

Church of England authorities at Chester Cathedral in the UK have removed the venue’s Wi-Fi network in a fluster after it was discovered that there were no restrictions placed on the holy connection.

Chester Cathedral’s Wi-Fi network was removed indefinitely after unsecured networks were investigated by journalists from the Chester Chronicle in what must’ve been a remarkably slow news day. Local church authorities realised that the cathedral’s available Wi-Fi service had no network restrictions on it, meaning that users could browse for all sorts of unholy data.

The fact-finding local reporters from the Chester Chronicle were very quick to point out that access to all websites meant that Wi-Fi users could easily be using the network to access obscene material. The newspaper decreed that locations with unrestricted Wi-Fi were allowing shoppers and passers-by to access Pornhub.com, though how they jumped to that sordid conclusion is not quite clear.

Officials at the Cathedral stated that they had explicitly requested that their IT providers set restrictions to the Wi-Fi network specifically to ban websites which included gambling or pornographic images. The network will be restored once these restrictions are in place, forcing British public porn-surfers to walk down the road to the next Starbucks for their connection fix.
